Changes to Universal Credit announced in todays' Budget speech have been welcomed by Severn Vale Housing.
Denise Shuker, customer & community director, said: “Some good news on changes being made to Universal Credit following today’s budget announcements – we’re pleased with the removal of the seven-day wait before a new claim can be made, and the improvements to the advance payments system: these include increasing the amount available and extending the repayment periods.
“Our concern remains, however, that many people on low income will still be hit by delays of five weeks or more before receiving payments from a new Universal Credit claim. Universal Credit is rolling out to Gloucestershire right now and, with Christmas already a financial stretch for many, we have real concerns about the extra financial difficulties many people on low income will face in the New Year if they are making a new claim. “
“Our message to customers stays the same: if you know you’re going to struggle with Universal Credit, please get in touch with your housing officer as soon as possible. Rent is a priority payment, and our housing team will offer support and advice, and be able to put you in touch with specialist advisers if needed.”
