Severn Vale Housing Society offers its profound sympathy to the family of Mrs Goodall who died as a result of a tragic accident at her home last year when a redundant back boiler in her living room fireplace exploded. We are very grateful for the tremendous amount of advice and support received from HETAS and the Health & Safety Executive in designing a solution to the problem which is also relevant in the national context. As a result we have visited around 1700 of our homes in order to make sure that our residents are safe. This type of Back Boiler was not only fitted in Housing Association and Council homes, but also in thousands of owner-occupied properties across the country. There is consequently a significant public interest issue connected with the case. Very clear and concise details of the risks and solutions are available from the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) web-site. The report can be found at: www.hse.gov.uk/services/localgovernment/boilers.htm. The HSE Information line is:0845 345 0055 Customers of Severn Vale who may still be unsure whether they have a back boiler, or they have a back boiler and are unsure if it is safe, should contact our repairs reception on 01684 272727. Members of the general public who have any concerns should approach an approved solid fuel heating engineer to have the appliance checked. Approved solid fuel engineers are listed with HETAS which is the independent UK body recognised by DEFRA to test and approve domestic solid fuel suppliers and fitters. The web contact is www.hetas.co.uk alternatively the HETAS telephone number is 0845 634 5626. |
