Policy Statement

Severn Vale Housing Society seeks to achieve equality of treatment for all customers, without discrimination or prejudice on the grounds of a person's race, ethnic origin, nationality, religion, cultural background, gender, sexual orientation, age or disability. The Society undertakes to deal firmly and promptly with any cases of discrimination or harassment.

All employees are required to follow and implement the Society's policies on equal opportunities and to undergo any training and development activities associated with that policy.

Achievement of Policy Statement

To ensure the achievement of this policy Severn Vale Housing Society will implement the following actions:

  • Ensure the specific policies and procedures for the allocation of properties are reviewed adhered to through the regular review and monitoring of allocations.
  • Ensuring that all tenants and prospective tenants are aware of its equal opportunities policies and provide translations of these policies as required.
  • The adoption of the provisions of CRE Code of Practice in Rented Housing including training, allocation and management staff in the contents of the code and their responsibilities under it;
  • The continued review and development of procedures for handling harassment and nuisance which ensure prompt action is taken;
  • Ensure contractors and other agencies working for the organisation are aware of its commitment to equal opportunities;
  • Monitor the provision of services to ensure that no inequalities exist;
  • Take disciplinary action against any employee whose conduct or actions are inconsistent with the Society's commitment to equal opportunities;
  • Be aware of equality issues when recruiting for the organisations Management Board and Committees.
Responsibilities

It is the responsibility of the Society's Chief Executive (and others) to ensure that:

  • All staff are aware of the Society's Equal Opportunities policy;
  • All staff are trained on the policy and the CRE's Code of Practice;
  • Monitoring records are collected in accordance with Society policies and procedures;
  • Customers are aware of the Equal Opportunities policy;
  • Disciplinary procedures are invoked against employees whose actions are inconsistent with the policy.
Consultation

Severn Vale Housing Society will liaise with community groups, recognised tenant/resident groups, the police and other appropriate bodies Council as necessary to assess the effectiveness of its Equal Opportunities policy.

Review

The Society will produce quarterly reports to the Management Board and Committees on the effectiveness of its policies with specific regard to assessment of needs and housing allocation.
